GLADUE CASEWORKER
Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto (ALST), a non-profit organization providing a range of services to the Aboriginal community, requires a Gladue Caseworker in Toronto. This is a permanent position beginning in late August.
The Caseworker will work preparing reports for the court for Aboriginal accused persons who are awaiting sentencing. These reports will be used by lawyers and judges to learn about the particular situation of the accused person and for assistance on sentencing options.
The Caseworker will have excellent writing skills, be able to interview people easily and be prepared to present information to the court under oath. The Caseworker must be able to work independently and to work on a number of files and reports simultaneously. Knowledge of how the criminal justice system operates is an important aspect of this work. Knowledge of the programs and services available to Aboriginal people in Toronto would be a great asset. Familiarity with word processing is essential.
Work as a Gladue Caseworker qualifies as articling experience for students who have completed their studies at law school.
