About Aboriginal Legal Services
Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS) was established on February 21, 1990, and has grown to become one of the leading Indigenous organizations in Canada dedicated to strengthening the capacity of Indigenous communities and individuals to address justice issues. Through Indigenous-controlled and culturally grounded legal advocacy, ALS provides alternatives to mainstream justice approaches that promote healing, accountability, and self-determination.
Today, ALS operates 13 offices, employs over 70 dedicated staff, and serves more than 2,500 clients each year. Our work spans across legal representation, policy advocacy, public legal education, Gladue services, and community-based justice initiatives.

About the Board of Directors

The ALS Board of Directors is a committed group of volunteers who guide and uphold the organization’s mission and long-term vision. The Board is responsible for:

• Setting organizational priorities and policy directions;
• Reviewing and approving financial statements and budgets;
• Supporting fundraising and outreach activities;
• Participating in strategic planning and oversight of senior leadership;
• Ensuring ALS continues to grow as a national leader in Indigenous justice and advocacy.
  
  

Board Members also participate in committees that align with their expertise, such as Governance, Policy, Finance, Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Human Resources, Nominating, or Community Relations and are expected to volunteer approximately three hours per month for committee work.

Note: ALS may appoint shadow board members (non-voting) to participate in Board and committee meetings and support governance work. Candidates may be considered for either Board Director or shadow board member placement based on skills, experience, and Board needs.

Applications are now open to stand as a candidate for election to the ALS Board of Directors and as a candidate for Shadow Board members.
