Announcement – Chantell Barker Named New Executive Director of ALS

​On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Chantell Barker to the position of Executive Director of Aboriginal Legal Services, beginning February 6th, 2023.  Chantell is Cree and comes from the Sapotawayak Cree Nation. Chantell’s spirit name is Geetchi Nodin Ikwe (Strong Wind Woman) and she is from the Deer Clan.

Chantell’s educational background is in Restorative Justice and Conflict Resolution. She is passionate about Indigenous justice and is a vocal advocate for social justice reform. She is well-recognized in her field and has presented at numerous conferences across Canada and at the United Nations in New York on the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system. You can watch a TEDx Talk given by Chantell in Fredericton, New Brunswick in September 2022 entitled, “Anishinaabe Peacemaking is the New Justice,”.

The Board is excited to work with Chantell as our new Executive Director and confident that ALS will be well-positioned under her guidance to thrive in the years to come. We feel very lucky to have found her and look forward to the organization’s evolution with her at the helm. 
 
About Us:

Aboriginal Legal Services (formerly Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto) was established on February 21, 1990. ALS was formed following a need for a legal related program for Aboriginal people living in the Greater Toronto Area.
